Types of Tractors
- Semi – trailer Tractors: These are the most common type. In a semi – trailer setup, the front part of the trailer rests on the tractor’s fifth – wheel coupling. The tractor’s rear axle bears a portion of the trailer’s weight. Semi – trailer tractors are widely used in long – distance haulage, especially for transporting large containers, as they offer high load – carrying capacity and stability during long – distance travel.
- Full – trailer Tractors: With full – trailer tractors, the trailer is connected to the rear of the tractor, and the tractor only provides the pulling force without bearing the vertical weight of the trailer. They are often used for specific types of cargo, such as in some construction – related transportation or in certain regional haulage scenarios where the nature of the load and the route conditions favor this configuration.
- Industrial and Yard Tractors: These are designed for use within specific facilities like factories, ports, or airports. They are smaller in size compared to long – haul tractors, offering better maneuverability. For example, in an airport, yard tractors are used to tow luggage carts, while in a port, they move containers around the terminal area. Their power source can be either internal combustion engines or electric motors, with electric – powered ones being more common in indoor or environmentally – sensitive areas due to their lower emissions.
